Save the Date - October 8, 2010, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm - NFI Vermont & The HowardCenter are pleased to present: Michael Nerney's The Adolescent Brain and High Risk Behaviors (morning lecture) and Current Trends in Substance Abuse (afternoon lecture).

Michael Nerney is an internationally known lecturer, and has served as consultant to a number of federal and state agencies, particularly on issues regarding substance abuse, juvenile justice and adolescent brain development. H has been a consultant for two of the major television networks and most recently appeared on the ABC program "20/20."  Mr. Nerney's lectures are relevant to parents with children of all ages and professionals working with youth.

Online Continuing Education Events:

• Cultural Competency CME/CEU. To train physicians to care for diverse populations, the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health has commissioned Cultural Competency Curriculum Modules. These modules are part of A Family Physician's Practice Guide in Culturally Competent Care, a self-directed, online training course for family physicians. The website, offering up to 9 continuing medical education and 10.8 continuing education credits, contains a variety of self-assessments, case studies, video vignettes, learning points, pre- and post tests. There is also a DVD. Courses and DVD are free.
• Depression: Common Questions in Assessment & Treatment. Presenters: Andrew Pomerantz, MD, and Brady Cole, MA, LADC. Pomerantz is Chief of Mental Health and Behavioral Science at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction. • The Impact of Psychological Trauma. Presenter: Margaret Joyal, M.A., Consultant and Trainer.
• Motivational Interviewing. Presenter: Geoffrey P. Kane, MD, MPH of Retreat Healthcare. Dr. Kane gives practical guidance on how to successfully implement a brief intervention for youth and adults who demonstrate at-risk behavior. Click here to see Dr. Kane's additional material and bibliography.

• NEW!  Culturally Competent Care in Mental Health:
  This 25 minute narrated video slide show teaches about approaches to providing culturally competent care to immigrant and refugee patients. The presentation is based on a talk by psychiatrist Dr. Lorin Boynton, given at a Psychiatry Chief Resident Conference at Harborview Medical Center.
